A Darfur genocide survivor, valedictorian, and visionary leader dedicated to transforming lives.
"Life ain't no crystal stair. I should know because I am a survivor of the Darfur genocide."
— Najwa Adam, Founder & President
A Journey of Survival
Najwa Foundation was founded in 2017 by Najwa Adam, a survivor of the Darfur genocide.
As a young mother, Najwa was forced to flee her home in western Sudan with her children to escape violence. She spent years navigating displacement, insecurity, and loss, while carrying the responsibility of protecting her family and preserving hope for their future.
Even in displacement, Najwa witnessed the power of education, community, and resilience. These experiences shaped her belief that humanitarian work must be rooted in dignity, cultural understanding, and long-term vision.
Triumph Through Education
After resettling in the United States, Najwa founded Najwa Foundation to support women and children facing the same hardships she once endured.
Today, she continues to lead the foundation’s programs, guiding distributions, partnerships, and community-based initiatives with deep care and firsthand understanding.
Co-Founders, Working Side by Side
Najwa Foundation is co-founded and led by Najwa Adam and her daughter, Siham Hassan, who work together to advance the organization’s mission.
Siham Hassan, Co-Founder, grew up shaped by displacement and resettlement. After arriving in the United States, she navigated language barriers and cultural adjustment while pursuing education with determination, eventually graduating as a high school valedictorian and earning triple degrees from Michigan State University.
Siham works alongside her mother to expand Najwa Foundation’s reach, bridge international humanitarian efforts with U.S.-based education and refugee support, and strengthen partnerships with institutions and communities.
Together, their leadership reflects both lived experience and forward-looking vision, combining resilience, education, and action.
"Najwa Foundation is about resilience, perseverance, determination, and hope. It's about daring to dream. It's about being the change we wish to see in the world. Dreaming shouldn't be a privilege—everyone, no matter where they're from, should have the ability to dream."
— Siham Hassan
